Unoccupied Play
From the very beginning of life, we see children as whole people. They are worthy of respect and listened to as they explore their world.
From birth to three months, infants are known to play. It may not look like play to the untrained eye at all. Infants observe their surroundings and display random movements with no objective. This is known as Unoccupied Play. Despite appearances, this is definitely play and sets the stage for future play and exploration.
Although you don't need to do anything special to encourage this type of play, it is very important to allow babies to have time to explore unimpeded. This might look like wiggling their hands and feet in the air, looking at themselves in a mirror, singing to them, or having "tummy time".
At Discovery Time, we provide lots of interesting stimulus for infants like mirrors, lights, song and high contrast pictures.
